Koinobori literally means "carp streamer", these are koi-shaped windsocks. They represent purification, growth, strength, courage, and perseverance. It is the symbol of the national holiday of May 5 in Japan: kodomo no hi (children's day). On this occasion, towns, villages, squares and gardens adorn themselves with dozens of flying carp. A Chinese legend tells that after going back up the river, the carps would fly to the sky turning into dragons. It is from this legend that koinobori appeared. The koinobori have become a symbol that illustrates the strength and perseverance of carps that go upstream against rivers and waterfalls.
